Environmental and Climatic Testing: Simulating Extreme Conditions

Environmental and Climatic Testing

INTEK, an independent laboratory active since 1994 and headquartered in Rezzato (BS), operates as a qualified technical partner for companies needing to validate the compliance of their products according to the most stringent international standards. Thanks to ACCREDIA accreditation (No. 00855) and state-of-the-art technological infrastructure, INTEK’s technical team supports designers in identifying potential performance degradation or structural damage, ensuring the highest quality and safety before market release.

Test Types and Technical Capabilities

The INTEK laboratory has a wide range of climatic chambers capable of meeting the requirements of all major electrical and mechanical safety standards.

  • Temperature Testing: simulation of cold, dry heat, and thermal cycles within a range of –70 °C to +180 °C (EN IEC 60068-2-1, EN IEC 60068-2-2).
  • Thermal Shock: execution of rapid temperature changes using dedicated chambers to test the resistance of materials to sudden temperature fluctuations (EN IEC 60068-2-14 tests Na and Nb).
  • Humidity: Evaluation of resistance to humid heat, both cyclic and constant, to analyze the integrity of insulation and the reliability of electronics (EN IEC 60068-2-30, EN IEC 60068-2-38, EN IEC 60068-2-78).
  • IP Protection Ratings: verification of the devices’ resistance to the ingress of water and dust (e.g., Arizona Dust) in accordance with EN 60529 and ISO 20653.
  • Materials Testing: flammability and heat resistance testing via Glow Wire Test  (GWFI/GWIT), CTI/PTI ratings, and ball pressure test.

Environmental Testing in the Laboratory

INTEK has climatic chambers capable of simulating temperature variations and a thermal shock chamber, enabling compliance with the requirements of all electrical safety standards.

Regulations and Reference Standards

Environmental testing at INTEK is governed by rigorous international standards that define test procedures and evaluation criteria for various industrial sectors. Compliance with these standards is not merely a regulatory requirement but a guarantee of product reliability in complex operating scenarios.

  • IEC 60068: represents the fundamental series of standards for the electronics industry, defining protocols for cold, dry heat, humidity, and combined tests.
  • ISO 16750: specifies environmental requirements for automotive equipment, focusing on stresses typical of the vehicle environment.
  • EN 50155: serves as the cornerstone for applications in the railway sector, where devices must withstand sudden temperature changes and continuous vibrations.
  • IACS E10: defines stringent requirements for equipment intended for the marine and offshore sectors, with particular attention to resistance to salt fog and extreme humidity.

Case Study: Advanced Diagnostics for Automotive Sensors

In the automotive sector, simply running a climate cycle is often insufficient to validate complex components such as sensors and control units. INTEK stands out for its ability to develop customized diagnostic systems using LabVIEW software and modular hardware such as NI CompactRio. This approach allows for real-time monitoring of component functionality during environmental stress, ensuring superior scalability and reliability for the most complex needs of the automotive sector.
