Marine Market

INTEK supports the marine sector in the qualification of electronic systems operating under extreme conditions, ensuring compliance with the stringent vibration, electromagnetic compatibility, and corrosion requirements set by the major international classification societies.

The marine sector demands significantly higher levels of reliability and safety than other fields. Equipment installed on board must withstand intense vibrations, extreme environmental conditions, saline atmospheres, mechanical stresses, electromagnetic interference, and sudden temperature changes.

INTEK supports manufacturers, shipyards, and component suppliers in the technical qualification of electrical/electronic products and systems intended for the maritime market, ensuring compliance with major regulations and the requirements of the leading classification societies (IACS, RINA, Lloyd’s Register, DNV)

Thanks to our advanced laboratories—vibration, environmental, EMC/EMF/Radio, ATEX, and low voltage—and the metrological expertise developed over more than thirty years of activity, we are a reliable, independent technical partner recognized by leading national and international organizations.

Testing and certification for marine equipment, electrical, and electronic systems intended for the marine environment

Why the marine market requires specific testing

Reliability under extreme conditions

Electrical and electronic equipment installed on merchant ships, recreational craft, offshore units, or onboard systems must operate without interruption in the presence of:

  • intense mechanical vibrations and shocks
  • a highly corrosive saline atmosphere
  • high humidity and rapid temperature changes
  • electromagnetic interference from radar, radio, antennas, and navigation systems
  • electrical stresses caused by complex onboard networks

Compliance with classification society requirements (IACS)

Many marine applications require testing conducted according to technical specifications dictated by standards such as IACS E10, Lloyd’s Register Type Approval System, and RINA Rules, applicable to electrical panels, control systems, power equipment, sensors, lighting, and automation.

INTEK performs tests and conformity assessments in accordance with the main European directives applicable to products intended for the marine sector, including:

  • Low Voltage (LVD)
  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
  • RED for radio equipment
  • ATEX for Potentially Explosive Atmospheres (Naval/Offshore)

All activities are supported by ACCREDIA accreditations and UL, ACAE/LOVAG, and CBTL IECEE certifications.

INTEK services for the marine sector

Vibration and shock testing

Marine equipment must meet very stringent requirements regarding mechanical strength. INTEK performs tests in accordance with industry standards, including:

  • IACS E10 – Vibration Test
  • Lloyd’s Register – Vibration Test 1, Test 2, Extreme Vibration
  • RINA Rules – Vibration Test
  • IEC/EN 60068-2-6, -27, -64 for shock, bump, and random vibration

Our vibration testing facility is equipped with advanced systems, high-speed cameras, and modal analysis software, ensuring comprehensive support even in fixture design.

Environmental and climatic testing for the marine environment

The marine environment subjects materials and components to extremely harsh operating conditions. In our laboratories, we conduct tests to verify resistance to:

  • salt fog (IEC/EN 60068-2-11)
  • high and cyclic humidity
  • large temperature fluctuations
  • thermal aging and plastics

Our climate chambers support accredited testing up to:

  • –65 °C / +180 °C
  • rapid temperature changes
  • condensation and hot-humid tests

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) for the maritime sector

The INTEK EMC laboratory is equipped with a FAR anechoic chamber and a shielded chamber, and conducts tests in accordance with major naval standards, including:

  • EN 60945 – Electronic navigation and radio communication equipment CISPR / EN 550xx emission and immunity Product and general EMC standards
  • CISPR / EN 550xx emissione e immunità
  • norme di prodotto e generiche EMC

We assist in the development of test plans (QTP) and provide regulatory consulting through our active participation in CEI technical committees.

Electrical and safety testing for onboard equipment

The marine sector requires equipment certified according to specific standards and specifications of the major classification societies. INTEK performs tests in accordance with:

  • EN 60947-1/-2/-3
  • EN 61439 for low-voltage switchgear
  • EN 60529 for IP protection ratings
  • Marine certification in collaboration with IACS, RINA, Lloyd’s Register, and DNV

We also support dielectric strength, continuity, heating, functional verification, and inverter/drive testing.

ATEX testing for marine and offshore applications

Where required (environments containing gases, vapors, or potentially explosive atmospheres), INTEK performs ATEX testing in accordance with the EN/IEC 60079 and EN/IEC 80079 series, including tests for:

  • impact resistance
  • IP
  • surface temperature
  • explosion / overpressure

EMF measurements and radio testing

For equipment with integrated radio functionality (local antennas, wireless devices, sensors), INTEK conducts testing in accordance with:

  • EN 301 489-x (EMC for radio equipment)
  • EN 300 220 / EN 300 328 / EN 300 330
  • EMF assessments according to EN 62311, EN 62233, EN 50364
